Friendster started it all. Shortly after, Myspace came around. Unfortunately, both ended up shutting down, or so I think. The birth of Facebook is to blame. Don’t get me wrong, I have a Facebook account and I like it. Like, not love.
To me, Facebook is supposed to be a site where we can connect with people we’re close to as well as acquaintances. Through the site, we can keep up with each other and share our thoughts and happenings with each other. It was like that in the beginning and I honestly was enjoying it. The popular social media platform is in a way still like that for some with added features such as the MarketPlace, News, Groups and Pages, as well as a separate Messenger app allowing us to keep in touch with some privacy through chat, audio calls, and video calls.
Even though there are additional stuff on Facebook now, I am now having mixed feelings with the site. For one thing, The posts we see on our feed are confusingly not on chronological order from newest to oldest as it was before. Posts from days before will suddenly show up on my feed along with some recent posts from others. Friends of friends are seeing and responding to my posts regardless of my settings. I am seeing irrelevant ads more often. And lastly, people’s drama and crap.
How I feel about people blasting their problems and issues as well as offensive and disrespectful posts and comments online may be offensive to some but supported by others. There are things that are just unnecessarily posted. Posts such as personal problems and issues, as well as posts, comments and remarks that are downright offensive, disrespectful, vulgar, and discriminatory.
We should all think about what we share online — including on Facebook before posting it. Think about how it will affect not only ourselves but others as well. There are stuff that should be left as private. Post responsibly, respectfully, and appropriately. This is what I wish things would be in the online world.
